Bulls FC Academy 4-1 Manly United at Northbridge Oval
Bulls FC Academy ended their season with a massive 4-1 win over Manly United in an entertaining clash at Northbridge Oval on Sunday.
With finals football out of the picture for both of these sides, the Bulls and Manly arrived at Round 26 eager to finish their season on a high after enduring middling campaigns. The Bulls could not reach the same heights as their previous season, whilst Manly will be reflecting on how their season panned out having been sat in first place for a period in the early weeks.
And it was the Bulls who kicked off proceedings, with Daniella Naeimi firing in a fantastic strike from the right wing into the opposite top corner of the net that shocked both the crowd and Manly goalkeeper Nicole Simonsen. 1-0 to the Bulls in the 21st minute.
Petria Phillips then doubled her side’s lead in the 34th minute after Erica Di Sciascio intercepted a Manly pass and spotted Phillips open in the box before guiding an excellent cross in for the Bulls No. 17 to control and finish past an outrushing Simonsen for 2-0.
The Bulls were seemingly unstoppable at this stage in the game and would make it 3-0 over the visitors in the 38th minute after some superb build-up opened the door for Phillips to run in behind and bury her strike to earn herself a brace.
Nicole Stuart secured a goal in the second half for Manly after arriving at the back post and calmly chipping Issabella Coelho in the Bulls goal. 3-1 in the 72nd minute.
However, the Bulls would soon restore their three-goal advantage through Phillips, who earned a hattrick for herself after making a late run and putting the finishing touches on Naeimi’s cutback in the 77th minute. 4-1 the final score.
Football NSW Institute 1-3 NWS Spirit at Valentine Sports Park
NWS Spirit came away with a strong 3-1 win over Football NSW Institute at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.
Both FNSW Institute and Spirit have been in-form of late, with the former winning two out of their last three and the latter coming into their own as the season progressed. This will be the final game that FNSW Institute will play in the NPL Women’s, with the team undoubtedly looking to see out their season with a win.
Spirit were the first to open the scoring on the day, as Morgan Roberts picked up the ball on the right wing and floated in a quality cross for Skye Halmarick, who assuredly headed home for 1-0 in the 7th minute.
The two sides were evenly-matched for much of the remaining ninety minutes, up until the 83rd minute when the game exploded into life after a clinical counterattack by Spirit led to Roberts finding herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper before tucking the ball into the bottom left corner. 2-0 to Spirit.
FNSW Institute then found a way back into the match in the 86th minute after Tiana Fuller’s low cross was unwittingly turned home by Savannah Murray for an own goal.
Spirit then executed a repeat of the dynamic which earned them their opening goal as Roberts glided down the wing before putting it on a platter for Halmarick to lodge the ball into the bottom left corner of the net in the 89th minute. 3-1 the final score.
Sydney Olympic 1-1 Illawarra Stingrays at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
It was a closely-fought encounter at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium as 4th placed Sydney Olympic hosted the 3rd placed Illawarra Stingrays in a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening.
After a nervy end to the season, Olympic confirmed their place in the finals with an important victory over Football NSW Institute during the week. With the Stingrays sat above Olympic in 3rd place, this match was the perfect preparation for both teams as they geared up to play finals football.
It was the Stingrays who took the lead in the 23rd minute though, as Sakura Nojima went to ground in the box and earned a penalty for her side. Siobhan Edwards then stepped up to take the resultant spot kick, which was strong enough to beat Sarah Willacy in the Olympic goal, who was unable to prevent it from flying into the top corner despite getting a hand to it.
Maxine Peak then restored parity for Olympic in the 36th minute after holding onto the ball through a Stingrays defensive challenge and confidently burying the ball underneath Sophie Emery in the Stingrays goal to make it 1-1.
The second half continued to be an even contest; however, the Stingrays would lose a player in the 71st minute after Hayley Taylor-Young retaliated to a pull back by a chasing Demi Koulizakis and stopped her run to knock the Olympic forward down, leading to a straight red card for the former and a yellow card for the latter. The match concluded 1-1.
Emerging Jets 0-4 Gladesville Ravens at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility
The Emerging Jets were trounced 4-0 by an efficient Gladesville Ravens side at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Sunday evening.
The Jets have been a standout side in the back half of the 2024 season, and will be buoyed by their recent momentum to wreak havoc on a Ravens side who are stacked with quality. The Ravens backed up their positive 2023 campaign, and will be looking to begin assembling the building blocks to go one better next year.
Claudia Cholakian opened the scoring the visitors in the 26th minute after latching onto a poor touch from the Jets goalkeeper and firing into an empty net to make it 1-0.
The Ravens star then notched a brace for herself in the 32nd minute, having made an excellent foray into open space on the right side of the box before unleashing a thumping strike that rocketed into the back of the net. 2-0 to the Ravens.
Continued dominance from the Ravens in the second half saw Lexie Moreno add a third for the away side after the No. 9 was brought down in the box and proceeded to send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot kick. 3-0 in the 63rd minute.
Annie Halls scored her side’s final goal of the day after intercepting a Jets pass in the midfield and driving forward before placing a well-taken curling finish into the bottom right corner of the net in the 84th minute. 4-0 the final score.
Sydney University 0-1 Northern Tigers at Sydney Uni Football Ground
The Northern Tigers finished their season with a resilient 1-0 win over Sydney University in a tough clash at Sydney Uni Football Ground.
Sydney Uni have stealthily been one of the form sides in the NPL Women’s competition in the lead in to Round 26, and will have known they had a challenge on their hands coming up against a Tigers side who battled spiritedly this campaign in an attempt to finish in the top four. Fans will expect a closely-fought encounter between these two teams.
The first half saw chances limited at both ends, with Sydney Uni well-marshalled by the Tigers defence and the visitors making the most of their forays at the Uni goal.
It was the Tigers who took the lead though in the 33rd minute through Lily McMahon, who put the finishing touches on a measured counter from the away side after making a smart run in behind and showing incredible poise to patiently iron out an opportunity before spotting a gap in the Sydney Uni defence and ushering the ball into the bottom left corner to give her side a 1-0 lead.
The match would then ultimately conclude in favour of the visitors, with the Tigers earning a 1-0 win in their trip to Sydney Uni Football Ground.
UNSW 5-0 Blacktown Spartans at The Village Green
UNSW delivered a 5-0 demolition of the Blacktown Spartans in a strong showing at The Village Green.
A rollercoaster 2024 campaign ended in survival for UNSW, with the side newly-promoted this season doing enough to keep their spot in the NPL Women’s competition for 2025. On the flip side lies the Spartans, who endured relegation despite playing an attacking brand of football and who became known as a giant killer this past campaign.
After a closely-contested opening 25 minutes, UNSW were able to open the scoring in the 25th minute through Sarah Moore, who did well to find the back of the net in a crowded area. 1-0 to UNSW.
A second goal would arrive for UNSW soon after Tiana Petkovski had her initial strike saved and subsequently put away on the rebound by Abbey Lemon, who was in the right place at the right time to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute.
A wonder strike from Talia Backhouse would end the first half on a high for UNSW, as the No. 45 for the home side struck a ferocious hit from distance that sailed beyond the Spartans goalkeeper and in underneath the crossbar. 3-0 in the 46th minute.
Petkovski then found the back of the net after being taken down by Anna Norton in the box and placing the ball into the top right corner from the spot kick to give her side a 4-0 lead in the 49th minute.
UNSW remained determined to add more goals even as the match came to a close, with substitute Jasmine Maguire getting on the scoresheet after racing onto a through ball and launching the ball across the goalkeeper and into the opposite corner. 5-0 the final score.
