Ahead of their crucial top-four clash with NWS Spirit this weekend, we spoke to UNSW FC star Angelique Hristodoulou on her side’s season so far and her recent form.

Hristodoulou joined UNSW ahead of the 2025 season, making the move over from Grand Finalist APIA Leichhardt as a statement signing for the exciting, rising club.

“It was a very last-minute decision to join UNSW, coming over from APIA and having a good season there,” Hristodoulou said on the move.

“I spoke to Zoran Naumovski who wanted to bring me over and it’s been great so far, so I’m definitely happy with the decision I’ve made.

“I’ve joined a really good club with a supportive environment and good coaches, so I couldn’t be happier with the move in the offseason.”

Hristodoulou has been a sensation for UNSW thus far, impressing with her quality in and out of possession, as outlined by her most recent performance, where she made the NPL Women’s Team of the Week with a major role in a significant 3-2 win over top-four rival Northern Tigers.

“Coming to a new club, I wanted to have a big impact and be a key player in the team, so I set that challenge for myself this season,” she said.

“I’m playing in a new role, a bit wider, so I think I’ve hit some good form and I’m enjoying playing in that position.

“Every week I go out there with the aim of making a difference – whether that be getting an assist, or getting on the scoresheet, which I’m still yet to do.

“I want to be a player that my team can rely on.”

Hristodoulou is certainly achieving that goal, and has helped her side go on a strong run of form, which has seen them take victories over third-placed Manly United and fifth-placed Northern Tigers, as well as a statement 4-1 win over Newcastle Jets FC.

“We didn’t start as well as we’d hoped,” said Hristodoulou when asked about the season so far.

“We had a couple of losses and draws, which wasn’t ideal.

“But because we were all new players, it took a while to gel.

“Now that the season’s progressed, we’ve gained some cohesiveness and have three wins in a row, so our form is starting to hit.

“We’ve also got a couple of A-League players who have joined our squad which has strengthened us, so we’re in good stead to end the season on a high note and sustain that position in the top four.”

This weekend, Hristodoulou and her side will aim to knock back another finals contender, as they take on NWS Spirit FC, currently in sixth spot, but level on points with UNSW in fourth.

“The competition is so tight, so with every team we play, it’s going to be crucial to get the three points,” said Hristodoulou on the match.

“In order to keep jumping the ladder and hold that position in the top four, three points is a must.

“Spirit have a good team, they’ve got some A-League players who have come back, but anything less than three points we won’t be happy with.”
