Puxty’s Late Stunner Earns UNSW FC Dramatic Point

Points were shared at Lambert Park as APIA Leichhardt and UNSW FC played out a high-quality 1–1 draw in the National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW Match of the Round.
In a contest befitting two of the competition’s frontrunners, APIA struck first through captain Ashleigh Letta before UNSW FC responded late, with Leia Puxty producing a moment of brilliance to snatch a deserved equaliser.
The hosts wasted no time asserting themselves, creating an opportunity inside the opening two minutes. A dangerous ball into the area caused immediate problems for the UNSW FC defence, with Christina Kiceec flicking it on to Letta, who fired just wide under pressure.
Letta would not be denied for long.
Moments later, Mona Walker showcased her vision in midfield, delivering a perfectly weighted ball over the top of the defence. Letta timed her run to perfection and calmly lifted her finish over the advancing Erin Nayler to give APIA an early lead.
UNSW FC responded positively and began to grow into the contest. Lexie Moreno delivered a dangerous cross into the box that narrowly evaded her teammates, before Koulizakis tried her luck from distance, sending a volley just over the crossbar.
The visitors continued to apply pressure, with Milan Hammond proving a constant threat down the right flank. Her cutback found Plessas in a promising position, but desperate defending from APIA denied a clear opportunity.
UNSW FC came agonisingly close to levelling the score around the half-hour mark. Moreno struck a powerful long-range effort that rattled the crossbar, with the rebound falling to Hammond—only for young goalkeeper Jacinta Gulabovski to produce an outstanding save to keep APIA in front.
APIA responded with a chance of their own soon after, as Ash Brodigan played Letta through on goal. However, Nayler reacted quickly, racing off her line to deny the striker a second.
The home side began to regain control as the half wore on, with Walker again at the heart of their attacking play. She set up Talia Kapetanelis in a promising position, but the forward couldn’t find the target.
Kapetanelis looked to make an impact early in the second half, attempting an ambitious effort from distance, but Nayler was equal to it with a comfortable save.
UNSW FC’s best chance of the second period came in the 60th minute, when Moreno threaded a beautifully weighted pass through to Chloe Smith. Gulabovski reacted quickly, rushing off her line to smother the chance and preserve APIA’s lead.
As the clock ticked down, UNSW FC continued to press. Moreno again went close from a set piece, her curling left-footed free kick narrowly missing the far post with just 10 minutes remaining.
The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute—and it was worth the wait.
Leia Puxty picked up possession on the left, drove at her defender, and cut inside before unleashing a stunning curling effort into the top corner, leaving Gulabovski with no chance and bringing UNSW FC level in spectacular fashion.
It was a goal that capped off a fiercely contested encounter and ensured both sides walked away with a point.
In the end, a draw was a fair reflection of a match filled with quality, intensity, and moments of brilliance—fitting for a clash at the top end of the table.
