Smith Cancels Out Letta As UNSW And APIA Play Out Entertaining Draw

UNSW FC and APIA Leichhardt FC shared the points after an entertaining 1-1 draw at The Village Green on Saturday evening in the NPL Women’s NSW competition.

In a thrilling contest between two Premiership contenders, APIA took an early lead through Golden Boot leader Ash Letta before UNSW responded through Chloe Smith before half-time.

Despite both sides creating several opportunities in an end-to-end encounter, neither could find a decisive winner, with the result dealing a blow to both teams’ title aspirations.

APIA started strongly and created the first opportunity inside 90 seconds, with Mona Walker unable to get the required connection on the ball.

However, the visitors needed just five minutes to find the breakthrough.

A sweeping team move involving almost 10 passes saw Sophie Hoban deliver a dangerous cross into the penalty area, with Letta reacting quickest inside the six-yard box to calmly finish and give APIA an early lead.

UNSW responded well, with Milan Hammond testing Anna Leat from the edge of the area, but the APIA goalkeeper was equal to the effort.

The visitors continued to threaten, with Hoban playing a clever through ball for Talia Kapetanellis, whose one-on-one effort was denied by Erin Nayler.

From the resulting corner, APIA came close again, with Walker’s header brilliantly kept out by Nayler before Hoban’s follow-up volley sailed over the crossbar.

UNSW then produced their own attacking response, with a flowing move ending in Abbey Lemon striking powerfully towards goal, forcing Leat into a superb save to tip the effort onto the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived in the 25th minute through Smith.

After APIA failed to clear their lines following sustained UNSW pressure, the ball fell kindly inside the penalty area after a series of efforts, including volleys and overhead attempts, before Smith reacted quickest to poke home.

The goal, Smith’s 11th of the season, rewarded UNSW’s persistence and levelled the scores at 1-1.

APIA almost restored their advantage 10 minutes before half-time when Kapetanellis found space inside the area, but she rushed her finish and pulled the effort wide.

The visitors went close again shortly afterwards, with Hoban rattling the crossbar with a powerful strike from the right.

UNSW responded in a contest that resembled a heavyweight battle, with Lemon arriving at the back post and forcing another outstanding save from Leat.

The second half began in similar fashion, with APIA immediately applying pressure. Hoban almost created an opening for Letta, but Angelique Hristodoulou made a crucial defensive intervention.

Hammond created UNSW’s first chance of the second half, once again forcing Leat into action.

With 20 minutes remaining, APIA had another opportunity after UNSW failed to clear their defensive lines, but Kapetanellis was unable to capitalise.

UNSW then produced their best chance of the second half through a quick counter-attack. Ava Collins delivered the ball into the penalty area, Smith cleverly dummied for Hammond, but the youngster’s effort drifted just wide.

As the match entered its closing stages, APIA came closest to finding a winner.

A deep free-kick was punched away by Nayler, with the ball falling to Tash Prior, whose lobbed effort was cleared off the line and onto the post by Poppy Channing as UNSW survived the danger.

Nayler was called into action again late, denying Hoban with a low save to her right.

On the stroke of full-time, Smith had the opportunity to become the match winner, but her effort from a promising position went wide.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, with both sides left to reflect on missed opportunities in a result that keeps the Premiership race finely poised.
