Round 11 Preview – NPL Women’s NSW

npl-womens-Preview

Intriguing fixtures lie ahead in Round 11 of the National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW competition, with the final week of Female Football Week adding extra significance to an already crucial weekend of action.

Key clashes await as the race for finals continues to heat up, with the competition still well and truly open heading toward the halfway point of the season.

NWS Spirit FC v UNSW FC

3pm, Saturday 16 May – Christie Park

League leaders UNSW FC face bottom-placed NWS Spirit FC in a clash between two sides at opposite ends of the NPL Women’s NSW ladder.

UNSW FC remain one of only two unbeaten teams in the competition and continue to produce dominant performances. The visitors will enter as clear favourites, having built their success on a strong defensive structure and consistent attacking output.

Spirit’s struggles continue, and despite a number of additions including Skye Halmarick and Avani Prakash, they were still humbled last weekend.

UNSW FC will know anything less than three points could allow rivals back into the title race, while Spirit will be desperate to show signs of improvement against the competition benchmark.

Bulls FC Academy v Manly United

2:40pm, Sunday 17 May – Northbridge Oval

In-form and third-placed Bulls FC Academy take on seventh-placed Manly United at Northbridge Oval in the opening match on Sunday.

After defeating APIA Leichhardt two weekends ago, Bulls backed it up with a six-goal performance against the surprise package of the competition, Sydney University. Amber Luchtmeijer and Liz Grey have scored in back-to-back matches and continue to be key contributors.

Manly left it late down the South Coast but secured a massive win, keeping them within touching distance of finals places. They must take points here or risk slipping further away from the top four.

Macarthur Rams v Northern Tigers

3pm, Sunday 17 May – Christie Park

Northern Tigers travel to face Macarthur Rams looking to continue their push towards the top end of the NPL NSW Women’s ladder.

Sitting sixth, the Tigers have shown strong attacking quality throughout the season, while the Rams enter the match in 12th and are searching for consistency after a difficult opening half of the campaign.

Macarthur will be keen to start putting some results together and secure wins to begin their ascent up the competition ladder.

Another side that needs points to stay in the hunt for finals football are the Northern Tigers. Consistency has been an issue, but having registered two wins in a row, they will be keen to continue that run here.

APIA Leichhardt v Illawarra Stingrays

4:50pm, Sunday 18 May – Lambert Park

APIA Leichhardt welcome the Illawarra Stingrays to Lambert Park on Sunday afternoon.

Three games without victory has seen Brad Attard’s APIA side slump from first place on the ladder to fourth. They will consider themselves unlucky last week and would have left Christie Park wondering how they came away with nothing from their clash against Gladesville Ravens.

A win is imperative to stay close to the league leaders in a fixture against a side that has proven a banana skin in the past.

It has been a tough season so far for the Stingrays, sitting 11th and winless since 14 March. They will want to halt that run and begin turning their season around.

Sydney University SFC v WSW

5pm, Sunday 18 May – Sydney Uni Football Ground

A crucial clash in terms of finals football takes place on Sunday as Sydney University take on the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Sydney University have again shown their ability to compete with the competition’s strongest teams, particularly at home where they have been difficult to break down. Last week’s 6-0 defeat to Bulls FC Academy came as a major shock, and they will be eager to show it was simply an off day.

The Wanderers, meanwhile, have impressed with their consistency and attacking depth, emerging as genuine title contenders in 2026 and continuing to impress. This will be a tough test against a strong young side and a strong indicator of their credentials.

Hills United v Gladesville Ravens

5:30pm, Sunday 18 May – VSP

Hills United and Gladesville Ravens meet in a tightly balanced mid-table clash, with both sides looking to climb closer towards the top four in the NPL NSW Women’s competition. Separated by just one position on the ladder, the match shapes as an important opportunity for each club to build momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Hills have shown steady improvement in recent weeks and will look to use home ground advantage to continue that progress, while Gladesville arrive with confidence after producing several competitive performances against higher-ranked opposition.

With little separating the two sides, the contest could come down to which team is more clinical in front of goal and better able to handle the key moments under pressure.

Sydney Olympic v Western City Rangers

5:40pm, Sunday 18 May – The Crest

Sydney Olympic host Western City Rangers in an important clash for two sides looking to move further away from the lower end of the NPL NSW Women’s ladder. Olympic sit 10th and will see this as a strong opportunity to collect points at home, while the Rangers arrive in 13th aiming to build momentum after a challenging start to the season.

Olympic have shown flashes of quality throughout the campaign but have struggled for consistency, particularly against sides above them on the table.

Western City, meanwhile, remain competitive despite their ladder position and will hope to frustrate the hosts and capitalise on counterattacking opportunities.
