It’s not easy to fill the boots of the 2022 National Premier Leagues NSW Women’s player of the year, but Stephanie Augoustis of Sydney University has been entrusted with that role.

Rola Badawiya left her mark not only in the yellow and blue but also in the competition claiming the league’s top gong in 2022.

Augoustis has already showed she can fill the role made vacant in Emily Husband’s team by scoring a brace in her first match of 2023.

The Uni striker had only words of praise for Badawiya and is relishing the pressure facing her this season.

“Rola has demonstrated exceptional proficiency as a player, and her contributions to the Sydney University team were invaluable,” said Augoustis of her former teammate.

“From my perspective, the number 9 role always carries a lot of pressure to put the ball in the back of the net.

“I find that the pressure is exciting, and it serves to enhance my performance each week.”

Augoustis has been at Sydney University since 2017 and has been biding her time, waiting for the opportunity to shine.

“Finally getting the opportunity to prove my worth is a significant milestone for me. Moving forward, I aim to build on this experience by continuously improving my skills and contributing to the team’s success,” Augoustis said.

“I understand that there will be challenges along the way, but I am prepared to work hard and stay focused to achieve my goals. Looking ahead, I hope to cement my place in the first-grade squad and make a meaningful impact on the team’s overall performance this season.”

Sydney University is known to be a proud club that has enjoyed great success both on and off the field, stemming from the family culture which starts at the top.

“The camaraderie within the Sydney University team is truly remarkable and I am honoured to be a part of it. Our collective drive to create a competitive environment where we can bring out the best in ourselves is what sets us apart,” Augoustis said.

“The facilities available to us provide everything we need to excel, and the support we receive from our coaches and mentors is second to none.

“Personally, I owe a great deal to Alex Epakis and John Curran who have made a big impact in my development as a player and a person in past seasons at Uni. I will always be grateful for their contributions to my growth.”

The 21-year old’s ambitions and aims are on a similar path to those of the football club.

“As a team, we are committed to approaching every game with a winning mentality, showcasing the impressive young talent that we have within our squad. Our goal is to not only succeed on the field, but to also demonstrate the level of dedication and teamwork that we have at Sydney Uni.

“With the unwavering support of Emily Husband, we are confident in our ability to work together towards achieving our ultimate goal – winning the premiership.

“I am determined to continue my success as top goal scorer. However, my aspirations go beyond just personal achievements. My ultimate goal is to compete at the highest level, and the Liberty A-League has been a long-standing target that I am eager to pursue.”
