Round 16 Preview – NPL Women’s NSW

The top four have begun to stretch their advantage over the chasing pack in the National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW competition but with Round 16 on the horizon, the question remains: can the gap be closed as the season pushes deeper into its decisive phase?

Northern Tigers v Manly United

6:30pm, Saturday 20 June – NTRA

It’s derby day at NTRA to open the Round 16 action, as the Northern Tigers host Manly United on Saturday night.

Beth Gordon starred for the Tigers last weekend, collecting a well-taken brace and will once again be a key figure in this clash following her strong start at her new club.

Manly United have historically been known as the “draw specialists”, and Tom Hopley’s side appear to be trending in that direction again this season, already recording six draws — four coming in their last five matches.

With both sides still holding slim finals hopes, this is a must-win fixture if either team is to keep their top-four ambitions alive.

Bulls FC Academy v NWS Spirit FC

2:40pm, Sunday 21 June – Northbridge Oval

Two in-form sides collide at Northbridge Oval in Sunday’s early fixture as Bulls FC Academy take on a resurgent NWS Spirit.

Bulls are looking dangerous once again, dismantling Macarthur Rams 5-0 last weekend — a Rams side that had been in strong form prior to that result. Bulls are scoring freely, finding the net 13 times across their last four matches.

However, when it comes to momentum, few sides are more dangerous right now than NWS Spirit. Three straight wins and just one goal conceded during that run has seen them surge off the bottom of the ladder and back into contention.

This represents arguably their toughest test in recent weeks, providing a strong indicator of just how far they have come during their mid-season resurgence.

Macarthur Rams v APIA Leichhardt FC

3:00pm, Sunday 21 June – Lynwood Park

A fixture that has often delivered high-quality contests in recent seasons returns at Lynwood Park, as Macarthur Rams host APIA Leichhardt on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams had been in excellent form, going four matches unbeaten before that run was halted by a heavy 5-0 defeat to Bulls FC Academy. Vic Guzman will be demanding a response, and there is no better opportunity than against a side like APIA.

APIA, after a patch of inconsistent results, have rediscovered their rhythm with two convincing performances, rediscovering their attacking edge in front of goal. Talia Kapetanelis appears to be hitting form at the right time, a worrying sign for upcoming opposition.

Illawarra Stingrays v UNSW FC

3:00pm, Sunday 21 June – The Pond

The Illawarra Stingrays face a major challenge as they host competition leaders UNSW FC at The Pond on Sunday afternoon.

It has been a difficult campaign for the Stingrays, who have now suffered three straight defeats and remain winless since Round 7.

UNSW, meanwhile, were forced to work hard for their latest victory, edging Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0. Despite the pressure, they continue to find ways to win and remain unbeaten for the season.

They will head into this clash confident of extending that run against a Stingrays side searching for a spark.

Gladesville Ravens v Western City Rangers

3:10pm, Sunday 21 June – Christie Park

Gladesville Ravens host Western City Rangers at Christie Park on Sunday afternoon in a key mid-table encounter.

The Ravens continue to show flashes of quality but have struggled for consistency throughout the season. They produced a strong performance last weekend to earn a well-deserved point against a solid Sydney University outfit.

The Rangers, meanwhile, slipped to the bottom of the ladder after defeat to NWS Spirit. Their winless run now extends to 11 matches, stretching back to late March, and they will be desperate to end that drought.

Sydney University SFC v Sydney Olympic

5:00pm, Sunday 21 June – Sydney Uni Football Ground

Sydney University host Sydney Olympic in a late Sunday clash at Sydney Uni Football Ground.

Four games without a win has seen Sydney Uni drift away from the top-four race, making this a must-win fixture if they are to stay in contention. Another dropped result could see them fall further behind the leading pack.

Olympic, meanwhile, have also gone three matches without a win, and their finals hopes are effectively hanging by a thread. However, they will still be motivated to finish the season as strongly as possible and climb the ladder.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Hills United

5:00pm, Sunday 21 June – Christie Park

The final match of the weekend sees Western Sydney Wanderers take on Hills United at Christie Park.

The Wanderers saw their three-match winning streak ended last weekend after a narrow defeat to the competition leaders. It was a frustrating result for Jamie Dib’s side, who will be eager to bounce back quickly and avoid losing further ground in the top-four race.

Hills United started brightly against APIA Leichhardt but ultimately came unstuck against one of the league’s strongest sides. They have now suffered three consecutive defeats and will be desperate to return to form, even on a tough away trip.
