A Fresh Direction: Stingrays Build Locally for 2026

After several strong seasons and a sustained push for the Club Championship with an experienced core, the Illawarra Stingrays enter the 2026 National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW competition having embraced a refreshed approach.
Throughout the off-season, the club has placed a strong emphasis on strengthening its local foundations, investing heavily in the development of players from the Wollongong and South Coast regions. With the retirement of living legend Caitlin Cooper and the departure of several experienced campaigners such as Siobhan Edwards, Alexia Karry-Stahl and Bella Keep, the upcoming season signals the beginning of a new chapter.
A key focus has been targeting locally based players currently competing elsewhere, as well as welcoming home those returning to the region. This strategy has created exciting pathways for emerging talent, while also allowing Stingrays youth players the opportunity to step up into the senior environment.
The club boasts a promising group of young players coming through the ranks and remains committed to providing meaningful exposure at senior level.
The return of experienced figures such as captain Chloe Middleton, goalkeeper Kiara Rochaix, Jasmine Limone (returning from UNSW) and Ruby Egan-Brown (returning from Sydney Uni) will add vital leadership, balance and stability to the First Grade squad. The club has also signed English born Aileen Williams, Annie Grove, Lana Elkordi, Maddi Cachia, Maddy Sawkins and Caitlin Russel.
Heading into 2026, approximately 80 per cent of the senior squad is made up of local players, a stat coach Steve Gordon is ultra proud of.
While this season represents a period of rebuilding, the belief within the group is strong that the Stingrays will remain competitive and continue to showcase their trademark passion and pride each week.
