Nicknamed the Gennaro Gattuso of the National Premier Leagues Women’s NSW competition, Estelle Fragale has been a mainstay in the APIA Leichhardt squad this 2024 season.
Moving into her third season at Lambert Park, Fragale is one of those players that doesn’t always receive the plaudits she deserves playing in the defensive midfield role.
First and foremost, Fragale feels at home with APIA and spoke about the culture of the football club.
“APIA is really special to me,” said the midfielder.
“It feels like a big family and seeing it grow is pretty cool. I am aware of the incredible progress the club has made over the years, so it is special to be a part of it and hopefully play a role in more of the clubs success.”
Key words in growth and progress have been there for everyone to see, something that Fragale says will continue at the football club.
“Every year our support grows more and more,” she said.
“Look at the GSAP girls being there late on a Sunday night, it’s unreal.
“They really were our 12th man last year and I can’t wait to see it again this season.”
After a fantastic season where APIA won everything they could except the Grand Final that eluded them, Fragale believes the team can better that performance this season.
“I think we definitely can improve on last season! The team has already showed an incredible amount of courage and character to bounce back from the opening two games,” Fragale said.
“With the drive and determination we have, I really think we can go all the way and be just as successful as last year.”
Yet to have the opportunity to play in the Liberty A-League Women’s competition, Fragale still has hope that someone will recognise her talents.
“It is something I definitely hope to achieve in the future,” Fragale said.
“However, at this point in time I am just really enjoying where I am at, playing with freedom and building my confidence each week.”
Back to the start of the story, how does the midfielder feel about the Gattuso nickname?
“I do like that one, especially coming from an Italian background,” said Fragale.
“I will never be on his level but apparently I match some of his qualities as a defensive midfielder, so I guess I’ll take that.”
